Pack Dynamics 4.1

The Auto-Break and Churn Impact

Pack Dynamics 4.1 was designed to make group riding feel more realistic by preventing riders from “ghosting” through each other. However, it introduced Auto-Braking: if you try to move through a rider in front of you without enough speed differential, the game tapers your speed. Understanding this is the difference between a podium and a mid-pack finish.

The Objective: Mastering the “Auto-Braking” and “Churn” logic to stay at the front of the pack without wasting watts.

Key Factors

Factor Behavior Tactical Impact
Lateral Movement Automatic You cannot manually steer into a gap unless using Zwift Play.
The “Churn” High Riders at the back are naturally pushed to the sides to move up.
Auto-Brake Velocity Check Your speed drops if you “bump” a rider’s rear wheel at low speed.
Draft Profile Conical The draft is narrowest at the front and widest at the back of the “Blob.”

Mastery Protocols

Avoiding the “Brake Trap”

If you are pedaling at 3.0 w/kg and the rider directly in front is at 2.9 w/kg, the game will eventually apply a micro-brake to prevent you from overlapping. To move up, you must surge to at least +0.5 w/kg above the pack average. This “overspeed” tells the algorithm you are overtaking, not just following, and it will move you to the side rather than braking you.

The “Blob” Positioning

In a large pack (The Blob), the safest place is the “Golden Third”—the front third of the group. Why? The draft is still 90%+ effective, but you are immune to the “Accordion Effect” (where the back of the pack has to sprint out of every corner to stay attached).

Drafting on Inclines

Pack dynamics change when the road tilts up. At 0-3% grade, standard pack dynamics apply. At a 4%+ grade, drafting effectiveness drops significantly and the “Sticky Draft” weakens. This is where you conquer the race by moving to the front; the “Blob” will begin to string out into a single line.

Pro Tip

If you find yourself drifting toward the back of the pack, do not slowly increase your power. You will likely hit the Auto-Brake of the rider in front. Instead, ease off for 1 second to create a tiny gap, then surge at 5+ w/kg to slingshot around the outside of the “Blob.”
