Beach Start

A Beach Start is a race initiation format where athletes line up on the shore and, at the signal, sprint across the sand into the open water to begin the swim leg. Common in Triathlons, Aquathlons, and Open Water Swimming events, the beach start adds a layer of explosive complexity that “Deep Water Starts” lack. Competitors must navigate 20–100 meters of soft, unstable terrain—often at maximal run effort—before transitioning into the water. This requires a specific blend of short-sprint speed and the technical ability to navigate the “surf zone.”

The beach start is notoriously chaotic, as the transition from a vertical run to a horizontal swim involves a physiological spike. Athletes utilize techniques like high-stepping through shallow water and Dolphin Diving to maintain momentum as the depth increases. A poorly executed beach start can lead to a wipeout in the shore break or a heart rate that is “red-lined” before the first stroke is even taken. Conversely, a master of the beach start can secure “clean water” and a prime drafting position, effectively perfecting the swim strategy in the first 60 seconds. The beach start is the ultimate test of an athlete’s ability to manage a rapid transition from terrestrial power to aquatic efficiency.

A large group of triathletes in swim gear runs from the sandy beach into the ocean, with tall buildings and white tents in the background. The event appears crowded and energetic, set on a lively city shoreline.
