Feeding Pontoon

In open-water and marathon swimming, a feeding pontoon is a fixed or floating platform strategically positioned along the race course to serve as the primary hydration and nutrition hub. For elite races exceeding five kilometers, these structures are essential for maintaining the high caloric and fluid demands of athletes without requiring them to exit the water. Because swimmers must remain in a horizontal, buoyant position to conserve momentum, the pontoon acts as a high-speed “pit stop” where timing and precision are as critical as the nutrition itself.

The logistics of a feeding pontoon are governed by strict tactical rules. Coaches and support staff stand on the platform and use “feeding sticks”—long, extendable poles with a cup or bottle holder at the end—to reach out over the water. As a swimmer approaches, the coach identifies their athlete and extends the stick, allowing the swimmer to grab their pre-mixed bottle or gel pack while treading water or mid-stroke. This system ensures safety and fairness, preventing collisions between athletes and boats while maintaining a uniform distance between the competitors and their support teams.

Pontoons are typically marked with designated zones for each team to prevent overcrowding and ensure all participants have equal access to their staff. For the endurance athlete, the feeding pontoon is a psychological and physical milestone; it is the site where 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour are delivered to prevent the “bonk” and where the tactical communication between coach and swimmer happens through quick shouts or signals. In modern marathon swimming, mastering the “grab and go” at the pontoon can be the difference between staying in the lead pack or falling into the wake.
