The Launch Protocol

Tactics: The Launch Protocol

The Solve: Neutralizing the “0-km/h” surge to ensure you make the front split without blowing up your legs in the first 2 minutes.

Tactical Overview

Zwift races don’t “ramp up”—they explode. Because there is no neutral start, the first 60 seconds are essentially a standing sprint. If you start pedaling when the clock hits zero, you are already 50 meters behind. To “Solve” the start, you have to master the Pre-Spin.

The HUD (Launch Metrics)

Phase Duration Target Intensity The “Solve”
The Pre-Spin T-minus 10s 2.0 – 3.0 $W/Kg$ Get the flywheel moving and the sensor “awake.”
The Snap T-minus 2s 150% – 200% FTP Ramp up so your avatar “slingshots” at 0:00.
The Hold 0:00 – 1:30 110% – 120% FTP Ride above threshold to clear the “churn” of the pack.
The Settle 1:30+ Draft Pace Identify your group and drop into the “Sticky Draft.”

Mastery Protocols

1. The “Slingshot” Launch

Zwift calculates your starting speed based on the power you are putting out the moment the clock hits zero.

  • The Solve: At 5 seconds to go, begin a steady ramp-up. At 2 seconds to go, you should be at your “Snap” power. When the screen says “GO!”, your avatar will fly past everyone who waited for the green light.

2. Clearing the “Churn”

In the first 500 meters, hundreds of avatars are occupy the same space. This is the “Churn.” Pack Dynamics 4.1 can micro-brake you if you aren’t careful.

  • The Solve: Stay in the top 10% of the pack. It is much easier to “drift back” into a group than it is to “claw forward” once a gap opens.

3. The 2-Minute Settle

Almost every Zwift race has a “fake” pace for the first two minutes. Riders go harder than they can sustain.

  • The Solve: Don’t panic if your Heart Rate spikes. Everyone’s does. Hold the wheel at all costs for the first 120 seconds. After that, the “Blob” will naturally slow down as people realize they can’t hold 5.0 $W/Kg$ forever.

The Pathfinder Edge

Pro Tip: Look at the “Nearby Riders” list on the right. If you see the $W/Kg$ numbers turning Orange or Red for the riders around you, you need to match them. This is the “Early Warning System” that a split is about to happen.
