Neutralized Start

A neutralized start (also known as a départ fictif or “fictitious start”) is a period at the beginning of a cycling race where the riders are in motion but are not yet permitted to compete or attack. During this phase, the peloton follows a lead vehicle—usually the race director’s car—at a controlled, moderate pace. The primary purpose of neutralization is safety; it allows a large field of riders to navigate technical city streets, tram tracks, or congested urban centers before reaching the “Km 0” marker, where the official racing begins.

In the professional ranks, the race director will often stand out of the sunroof of the lead car, holding a red flag to maintain the neutralization. Once the course is clear and the “active” start line is reached, the director drops the red flag or waves a green flag, signaling that the race is live. However, the neutralized start is not exclusive to the pros. It does occur in Gran Fondos and large-scale amateur events, where thousands of riders must be escorted safely out of a host city. For the age-group athlete, the neutralized start is a tactical “positioning battle”; while you cannot sprint ahead of the lead car, riders are constantly jostling for a spot near the front to avoid being caught behind a crash or a “split” the moment the hammer drops.

Despite the slow pace, a neutralized start is rarely “relaxed.” It requires high levels of concentration as riders are packed tightly together, often bumping shoulders or handlebars in a fight for the wheels of the favorites. The regulations are strict: any rider attempting to attack or pass the lead vehicle before the official start is subject to immediate penalties or disqualification. For the endurance athlete, this phase is about mental structure—staying calm and preserving energy while maintaining a high-vantage position before the transition into the intensity of the competitive race.
