Neutral Service

Neutral Service is a specialized support system in competitive cycling and triathlon designed to provide immediate mechanical assistance to any athlete in the field, regardless of team affiliation or brand sponsorship. In the professional peloton, where team cars may be trapped behind a crash or separated by a gap in the field, neutral service vehicles (historically provided by Mavic and by Shimano) act as the “mechanics of the race.” They carry a universal inventory of spare wheels, chains, and sometimes even complete bicycles to ensure that a mechanical failure doesn’t prematurely end a contender’s race.

In triathlon and amateur endurance events, the concept of “neutral” evolves. Since triathletes are individual competitors rather than members of a professional team, almost all mechanical assistance provided by the race organizer is technically neutral. On an Ironman or 70.3 course, mobile motorcycle support and stationary bike tech stations function as the neutral backbone of the event. In Gran Fondos and non-professional road events—including organized training camps—this support is most commonly referred to as SAG (Support and Gear). A SAG vehicle or “SAG wagon” provides the essential mechanical and nutritional safety net for athletes, ensuring that no one is left stranded due to a mechanical issue or exhaustion in a remote location.

Whether it is a Shimano car in the Tour de France or a SAG van at an Altitude Lake Haus camp, the objective remains the same: the preservation of the athlete’s momentum and the integrity of the journey. For an endurance athlete, the presence of neutral support is a safety net, but relying on it depends largely on the location of the support vehicle when it is needed, and knowing when to utilize your own on-bike kit to fix the problem and maintain speed.
