Upper

The Upper is the structural chassis of a performance shoe, encompassing everything above the midsole. In high-stakes endurance disciplines like gravel racing or marathon running, the upper is a masterclass in material science—balancing the competing demands of lockdown, breathability, and protection. It is the primary interface between the athlete’s foot and the mechanical leverage of the shoe, responsible for translating every watt of power or ounce of propulsion into the ground.

Modern upper construction has evolved from heavy leathers to engineered synthetics, 3D-knits, and monofilament meshes. For the ultra-endurance athlete, a well-designed upper must accommodate peripheral edema (swelling) during multi-hour efforts while maintaining a secure heel cup to prevent friction and blisters. Whether it utilizes a BOA Fit System for micro-adjustable tension on a cycling shoe or a “gusseted tongue” to keep debris out on a trail run, the upper is the first line of defense against the “hot spots” and biomechanical inefficiencies that can compromise a mission.
