The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) is the global authority on mountain bike trail advocacy, sustainable land use, and rider education. Founded in 1988 by a group of California-based clubs concerned about trail closures, IMBA has evolved into a worldwide network that bridges the gap between mountain bikers, land managers, and environmental conservationists. Its mission is to create, enhance, and protect great mountain biking experiences by proving that high-performance trail use can coexist with nature.
In the endurance world, IMBA is most recognized for its Trail Solutions and Ride Center programs. These initiatives set the international “Gold Standard” for trail design, focusing on “flow,” sustainability, and erosion control—essential factors for hosting long-distance XC races and multi-day stage events. By categorizing trail systems into Bronze, Silver, and Gold-level Ride Centers, IMBA provides a roadmap for cycling tourism and helps athletes identify world-class destinations for high-volume training. As the collective voice for millions of riders, IMBA ensures that the “Endurance Archive” of trails remains open, safe, and challenging for future generations.
