Metric Century

A Metric Century is a cycling milestone consisting of 100 kilometers, or approximately 62.1 miles. While the 100-mile “Imperial Century” remains the traditional gold standard in the U.S., the Metric Century has become a globally recognized benchmark for developing endurance athletes. It serves as a critical bridge in periodization, transitioning a rider from short-course fitness to the sustained aerobic capacity required for Gran Fondos, stage races or the 112-mile bike leg of an Ironman.

Completing a metric century is as much a test of exogenous fueling and pacing as it is of raw power. At this distance, an athlete’s internal glycogen stores are typically depleted, necessitating a tactical approach to hydration and caloric intake to avoid bonking. While the term “Century” is specific to the cycling world, the 100km distance is also a prestigious milestone in Ultra-running. In both disciplines, reaching the 100-kilometer mark is a definitive proof-of-concept for an athlete’s structural durability and mental fortitude.
