Power-Up Efficiency

Power-Up Efficiency

A power-up in Zwift isn’t a flat bonus; its effectiveness is scaled by your current speed and environment. Using an Aero Helmet at 20km/h is a waste of time. Using it at 60km/h is a race-winning move.

The Objective: Understanding the mathematical “Multiplier Effect” to ensure you never waste a bonus.

Essential Tips

The HUD

Power-Up Function Optimal Scenario The “Solve”
Aero Helmet Reduces CdA by 25% Flats / Descents (>40km/h) Save it for the final 300m or high-speed descents.
Lightweight (Feather) Reduces weight by 10% Steep Inclines (>6%) Only trigger when the gradient turns Orange/Red.
The Anvil Increases weight Descents (> -3%) Use to “Super-Tuck” faster and drop the pack.
Burrito Disables draft for others Breakaways / Sprints Trigger after you have gapped the rider behind you.
Draft Van Increases draft effect Middle of the “Blob” Use when “Vegas hungover”—it lets you rest at lower watts.

Mastery Protocols

The Aero Multiplier

The Aero Helmet reduces your wind resistance. Because wind resistance increases exponentially with speed, the faster you are going, the more watts the helmet “saves” you. At 30km/h, it saves ~15 watts. At 50km/h, it saves ~45+ watts. If you get an Aero helmet early, hold it. Do not use it to “move up” on a climb. Save it for the final sprint where speeds exceed 55km/h.

The Feather Fallacy

Many riders trigger the Feather as soon as the road tilts up. Wait for the “Pivot Point.” On a 2% grade, the Feather does almost nothing. On a 10% grade, the Feather can save you 15–20 watts instantly. If you are in a draft on a climb, don’t use the Feather. Use it when you are leading or trying to snap the draft of someone behind you.

The “Ghost” Strategy

The Ghost makes you invisible for 10 seconds. Do not use it when you are in the middle of the pack. Use it when you are at the front and about to launch a breakaway. By the time they realize you are gone, you have a 50-meter gap.

Pro Tip

In 2026, the Anvil is the most underrated tactical tool. If you are at the top of a climb with a small gap, trigger the Anvil on the descent. You will hit “Super-Tuck” speed faster than the chasers, allowing you to recover your HR while they have to pedal to keep sight of you.
