Breaking Down the Basics
This is your definitive starting point for achieving age-group greatness. Shattering the ten-hour barrier is a physiological and psychological objective that requires more than just high wattage—it requires tactical precision, elite periodization, and an unrelenting investment of time.
From the technical rigor of ranking verification to the scientific logic of our Course Coefficients and the high-stakes logistics of the Santa Monica awards ceremony, we have engineered this page to ensure you master the mechanics of the journey before you lace up or clip in. Review the Intel below. Make the commitment. Accept the Challenge.
Performance Index
A sub-10 at Ironman Hamburg is fundamentally different from a sub-10 at Ironman Lanzarote or Canada. To protect the integrity of the Sub-10 Challenge reward, Ho’Omau utilizes a Course Coefficient (Cc). This ensures that the age grouper purse rewards the best athletes, not just the fastest pavement.
The Data Set
We utilize the “Contender Class”—a specific data slice of finishers between 9:00:00 and 11:00:00. This removes professional “outliers” and “survival-mode” finishers, providing a pure look at the finish times and the competitive age-group density for each course.
The Eligibility Filter
Any course with fewer than 3 years of data is “Blacklisted” for the 2027 Sub-10 Challenge. We will not gamble your ranking on a course without a statistically significant performance history.
The 5-Year Window
We analyze a rolling 5-year average of Qualislot™ data for every course on the circuit. To maintain accuracy, we only include data from 2021 onwards to account for the modern evolution of “Super-Shoes,” advanced aerodynamics, and nutrition.
The Math
You must break 10 hours on your chip time to be eligible, but the Cc determines your final rank on the leaderboard. Your Challenge Score (Cs) is calculated as: Official Chip Time x Cc = Cs
Documentary Protocol
We aren’t just looking for fast times; we are looking for the “human component” of the sub-10 journey. Selection for the documentary series is a separate, secondary layer of the challenge.
Selection Process
Upon accepting the Challenge terms and selecting their target race, athletes have the option to submit a “Sub-10 Brief”—a 60-second video or 300-word summary of what prompted them go on this journey. Our production team selects a diverse group of 10 athletes to include in the documentary.
The Spotlight
Depending on the timing of your target race, our production team will focus on the 12 weeks leading up to your race, culminating in on-site coverage of your performance. This is your chance to showcase your Squad, support team and your personal “Why.”
Filming Requirements
While our production team will visit selected athletes once during the season, each participant will be required to provide “Raw Feed” content (GoPro footage, Strava data exports, selfies, voice memos, etc) from their training blocks.
The Launch
Gala & Claims Process
The Sub-10 Challenge doesn’t end at the finish line; it ends on the podium in Southern California, featuring the Top 5 Sub-10 finishers based on their final Cc times.
Verification Window
Once you cross the line, you have 72 hours to submit your “Verification Packet” (Official results link + Raw FIT files). We utilize a “Mechanical Check” to ensure data integrity and rule out technical drafting or course-cutting.
Awards Celebration
The Top 5 finishers receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Santa Monica for the awards ceremony and “Physical Check” presentation, including a professional photoshoot for our Who Crushed It archive and a VIP dinner with Ho’Omau Chief Andy Funk.
Final Ranking Seal
The Top 20 ranking is finalized within 10 days of the last full-distance Ironman in 2027 and submitted for certification and sign-off by our executive staff. The final results are posted on the Sub-10 Standings page.
Payout
Top 20 Age Group rewards are disbursed via bank transfer within 10 days of the Awards Gala.
