Unbound
GRAVEL
The 20th anniversary of this legendary race proved that Unbound is defined less by speed and more by raw, unadulterated resilience. Facing the toughest conditions in race history—relentless rain, wind, and thick Kansas mud—athletes across every distance pushed past their limits in the Flint Hills. The story of the weekend belonged to Robin Gemperle, who conquered the grueling 356.5-mile XL distance in an astonishing 21:20:05, including miles of hiking through impassable mud, while Svenja Betz cemented her ultra-endurance status by claiming the women’s XL title in equally brutal conditions.
In the flagship Elite 200, Mads Würtz Schmidt executed a powerful solo breakaway through the sludge, and Sofia Gomez Villafañe secured her second Unbound title in a sprint against four rivals. The depth of the field continued in the 200-mile overall division with Anders Fjordbach and Elizabeth Hermolle rising to the top, while Robert Oehler and Kylee Hanel dominated the 100-mile event.
The momentum carried through to the shorter distances, with Owen Beverlin and Katie Perry earning 50-mile victories, Jake Mercado and Heidi Hansen leading the Junior field, and Chris Juliano and Terri Jakobe rounding out the weekend with 25-mile wins. It was a historic celebration of grit, proving once again that in Kansas, the finish line is a badge of honor.

Incredible few days for endurance sports whether you are a runner, cyclist or triathlete. Can’t ask for much more than 7 races over a single weekend!
Damn Unbound looked like a disaster on top of a disaster this year.
