Every Vegas In 24 attempt requires a meticulous operational plan. As World Record rider Juliana Buhring noted of Vegas In 24: “Cycling this distance in 24 hours is hard going, but doing it unassisted takes the challenge to a whole ‘nother level of difficulty both physically and mentally.”

Whether you are mobilizing your own support crew or utilizing Ho’Omau Pro Support, the 24-hour clock does not care about excuses. Perfect execution is a prerequisite for success. This page provides a detailed breakdown of rules, requirements and support options that will help you solidify your initial plan of attack to conquer the challenge.

Victory in the desert is won months before you clip into your pedals. Route logistics, rest stop strategy, safety assessments, equipment choices, crew selection and analysis of all variables are the difference between a DNF, a successful finish, and ultimately – the Hall of Fame.

– Andy Funk, Chief Ho’Omau

The desert doesn’t care about your goals or training plan. To conquer the 24-hour clock, you must respect the environment and the weather. There are only two narrow windows of opportunity where the Mojave allows a rider to pass safely: Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November).

Before you lock in a date, you must analyze several variables. If you ride self supported, we will guide you in the right direction. If you use Ho’Omau Pro Support, your Rider Portal provides you with every imaginable detail about your upcoming journey, including detailed weather forecasts along the entire route and historical temperature, wind, precipitation and humidity patterns to help you pick the best possible window for your attempt.

The Summer Trap

Attempting Vegas In 24 in the peak of summer is a high-speed collision with 120°F (49°C) heat. It is a medical liability, not a race. We do not sanction attempts during the months of June through August.

The Winter Wall

While we sanction attempts during the winter, sub-freezing temperatures in the high-altitude desert and limited daylight will sap your core temperature and likely crack your resolve before you reach the halfway mark.

Absolute Self-Sufficiency

Your crew, whether you ride self-supported or with Ho’Omau Pro Support, is there to document, cheer and protect—not to serve. In a Vegas In 24 attempt, the rider is a closed system, and your crew is prohibited from assisting you. That includes your nutrition, bike, navigation or supplies.

Shop Logistics

All shopping or resupplying must be done by you at commercially available rest stops.

Unfixable Mechanicals

In case your bike is unrideable due to a catastrophic mechanical failure, but you have come along far enough to want to finish your ride – you may use a spare bike provided by your crew or Ho’Omau Pro support. Your finish will be noted on the leaderboard as ‘Finished with Mechanical’, below riders who finished without assistance.

Rescue Protocol

Crew intervention only occurs in the event of a crash, a medical emergency, or a situation where rider safety is dangerously compromised. Once the crew assists you in any physical capacity, the official timed attempt is over. However, similar to an unfixable mechanical, you may – in most circumstances – finish your ride but will be noted on the leaderboard as ‘Finished with Assistance’. Your ride will not be eligible for the Hall of Fame.

No Drafting

No matter what support options you decide on, this is a battle between you and the air. You must punch your own hole in the wind for every single mile you conquer.

Drafting other cyclists, motor vehicles, or your own follow car is strictly prohibited. Follow-car video footage will be used to verify that no aerodynamic advantage was purposefully taken. If your follow car is forced to skip ahead of you, your crew must bring the vehicle behind you as quickly as reasonably possible.

Full Documentation

From the moment you roll out until you reach the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, the cameras are rolling. Rear and front dash cameras are mandatory. This footage serves as proof of your ride and verifies the integrity of the effort. If you use Ho’Omau Pro Support, we can livestream your entire event for you with our 3-camera Starlink-powered technology.

Unless you use our Ho’Omau support crew, final ride certification and leaderboard inclusion is granted only after a review of the raw video footage and a forensic check of your FIT file and your follow car’s GPS data.

Riding self-supported is the rawest way to face Vegas In 24. We encourage it, but with a very important disclaimer: It is a massive undertaking that demands well over 100 hours of logistical preparation.

Entering the Mojave without professional intel is a high-stakes gamble, more so than a bad bluff at the Vegas poker table. You will be responsible for your own deep-route scouting, analyzing crosswind corridors, and mapping out the existing life-lines (rest stops) hidden in the emptiness. Without researched and verified data, you are flying blind through a furnace, relying on guesswork where there is zero margin for error.

The Crew Mandate

You must maintain a minimum 2-person licensed crew to rotate driving. Fatigue is your crew’s biggest enemy; an exhausted driver is a liability to you and the mission. No exceptions!

Vehicle Readiness

Got that latest service inspection from your dealership? Mechanical failure, a flat tire or an overheated desert engine results in a mission failure – you won’t have video verification of your ride, resulting in a DNF.

The Technical Burden

You are responsible for installing and maintaining front & rear dashboard cameras with 24-hour continuous recording. Without this footage, your ride cannot be verified for the Leaderboard.

Medical Contingency

While not mandatory, we highly recommend a crew member with an MD or RN background. In the deep desert, you are hours from emergency services. While you are probably of the superhuman kind, do not be careless.

If you don’t want to go through the logistics, planning, research, financial and time investment to put your event on the map, you can choose between 3 levels + Add-On options of Ho’Omau Support to do some, most, or all of the heavy lifting for you. Ho’Omau Support services are optional, but if you’d rather train for it than plan for it, you should study this page with an open mind.

The clock only starts when you do, but the mission begins the moment you put your name on the calendar. Submitting your Intent to Ride is the first official step. This process allows us to review your rider profile, coordinate logistics, and ensure your chosen ride window doesn’t conflict with other Vegas In 24 efforts already on the calendar. Here is what you need to know:

No Commitment. The preliminary process is free. There is no obligation to proceed until your ride is confirmed and you tell us you are ready.

The Entrance Fee. Once Ho’Omau has reviewed your Intent to Ride, you are ready to lock in your date. A one-time $375 entrance fee secures your spot on the official calendar and covers your athlete dossier, event swag, and the award trophy.

Total Flexibility. We know the desert is unpredictable. If you are utilizing your own support crew, you can adjust your route or event date at any time as your training evolves. If you decide to use Ho’Omau Pro support, you have to give us proper notice in accordance with our rules, so that we can adjust our own logistics.

User Account

If you don’t have a Ho’Omau user account yet, get one now (otherwise skip to Step 2). Scroll to the very top of the page and click Sign Up. You cannot submit an Intent to Ride without an account.

Intent to Ride

Fill out our Intent to Ride so that we can get to know your goals and preliminary setup, including the route, timeline, support options, and so on. This is not an application – however we do want to know who you are before we greelight your ride.

Complete Your Profile

After you secured your account, go to your athlete page. Before you submit your Intent, your page must be verified with our blue checkmark, which happens automatically as soon as your profile information is complete.

Rider Fee

Once you get the green light from Ho’Omau HQ, pay the $375 acceptance fee, and officially confirm your ride. You can now decide whether you will go raw with your own support crew or let Ho’Omau lend a helping hand – or you can make this decision later.
